Full Description

Former mill, depicted on the 1st and 2nd edition OS maps, with dam and lade to the west. Surveyed in 2010 by Cameron Archaeology in advance of the proposed conversion of the mill to form a dwellinghouse. The mill was originally built in the mid 18th century and was extensively altered and extended in the 19th century. The mill has its main axis on a north-northeast to south-southwest alignment, and was perhaps designed by James Fordyce. It has an inscribed datestone reading 'SAG 1749'. The mill is a 40.5 m x 8.1 m single-storey and loft building, constructed of coursed granite with cherry-cocking. It was originally built for flax but was later converted to flour and barley. Substantial alterations were made to the buildings in the recent past, and virtually all the doors and windows have been blocked with breeze blocks. At least four phases of building were recorded.
