Full Description

Remains of farmstead. The OS 1st edition map shows two rectangular buildings, the southern one with an attached garden enclosure to the south. By the time of the 2nd edition map the S building has been extended to an L-plan and the enclosure divided into two. Current OS maps depict both buildings as roofless. Site visit by RCAHMS in 2002 recorded the remains of both buildings, one set above the other on platforms dug into the slope to a depth of 1m. The lower building is a cottage measuring 10.8m from east-southeast to west-northwest by 5.4m transversely overall. Its wall is 0.6m in thickness and stands up to 1.8m high at the southeast corner, though elsewhere its height has been reduced to about 1m. There are a central entrance and flanking windows in the south-southwest side, and a small outshot is attached to the east-southeast end. The platform immediately upslope from the cottage measures some 21.5m in length from east-southeast to west-northwest and its leading edge, which is revetted with drystone masonry, is about 0.8m in height. A range extends along the back of the platform, it measures 13.9m from east-southeast to west-northwest by 5m transversely over walls 0.6m in thickness and about 1m in height. It contains two compartments, the smaller lying at the west-northwest end, and has an entrance in its south-southwest side.
