Full Description
Remains of a possible castle. Only one wall of rubble masonry remains of this building which the OS Name Book notes was sometimes referred to in the neighbourhood as 'The Auld Castle at Inaltrie'. In the north side are the remains of two small niches, and in one part of the building there is a deep circular hole, about the diameter of an ordinary draw well, filled with rubbish. There was a vault close to it but no trace now. Dr WD Simpson suggested that it was of 13th century date judging by the size of the wall and the type of bonding visible on a photograph. He had not actually visited the site. In 2001 a watching brief was undertaken in advance of a pipeline that passed within 20m of the west corner of the surviving wall. No structural or artefactual remains were recovered.
