Full Description
The village of Fordyce is shown on the 1st and 2nd edition OS maps, but has medieval origins and to some extent its streets follow the medieval plan. The Kirkton of Fordyce was erected into a Burgh of Barony in 1499 by Bishop Elphinstone. The status of a Barony entitled it to hold markets and fairs. The earliest was known as Summariffe Fair, later called Hallow Fair, which took place on common land immediately east of the village, today bisected by the Portsoy Road. A church dating to at least 1272 (NJ56SE0001) and a castle dating to 1592 (NJ56SE0002) lie at the northern tip of the village. The majority of the houses and public buildings shown on the early edition OS maps survive, and are Listed B or C. There has been moderate expansion of the village on its west and south sides.
