Full Description

Village of Sandend, comprising cottages and curing sheds dating to the 18th Century. It is classic group of fisherman's cottages, 1 and 3 storey, with gables to the sea. There are also 3 tiny fish curing sheds with preparation vaults. Fish smoking kilns are located at NJ554 665. Dating to the mid-late 19th Century, the building is weatherboarded with a tall ridge louvre and abutting storages shed. The small harbour is enclosed by 2 curved rubble walls with later concrete facing. In 2005 a watching brief was carried out on works for upgrading of the waste water treatment plant at Sandend. Along the route of the pipeline, laid along the modern road, a stretch of earlier cobbled road was found between nos 39 and 42, but no other archaeological features were recorded.
