Full Description

Remains of a building. Two buildings are depicted on the 1:2500 OS map published 1965, the larger annotated The Firs, the second standing to the northeast. Remains of the smaller building, comprising a low foundation and fireplace with chimney, were recorded by field survey in April 2021. The foundation measures 5.18m by 3.08m, the foundation wall constructed of concrete, 0.2m thick and standing 0.27m above the present ground surface. The fireplace is also of concrete construction, the jambs, lintel and chimney breast of smoothly finished cement. Holes in each jamb presumably secured the bars of a grate. An iron hook for hanging a cooking pot remains attached to an iron bar fitted across the flue. The chimney is a broken piece of ceramic sewer pipe. Although none of the upper structure remains, bolts projecting from the foundation walls suggest a timber sillbeam as the basis of a wood-framed structure, perhaps clad in corrugated iron.
