Full Description

Hotel, still in use, built in the late 19th century. On the 1st edition OS map it is named Gordon Arms Hotel. It is constructed from coursed granite, with extensive sandstone dressings and a bull-faced granite base course. Most of the hotel is two storeys, with large canted three-storey corner block rising full height to an octagonal turret with brattishing. The Square and Castle Street elevations both have four bays, and there is a near-centre doorway to the Square, recessed under a wide depressed arch and flanked by polished granite engaged columns. There are string courses above the ground and first floor windows, also an eaves cornice, bipartites to the ground and first floors, and five gabletted dormers rising through the wallhead. Both wide wallhead gables have apex corniced stacks, and the slate roof has a tiled ridge crest.
