Full Description

Remains of pre-improvement buildings and associated buildings in an area of scrub deciduous woodland. The site was surveyed by the Forestry Commission in 2007. Green glazed pottery sherds of 14th to 15th century date have been found in the adjoining garden, There is a reference 1535 in the Book of the Great Seal to the lands of Clune with 'lee pele'. This once separate entity was subsumed into the lands of the fermtoun of Gibston. An estate plan of 1764 shows the settlement scattered along the spring line. By the time of the OS 1st edition Clune had become Clean Brae and rationalised into a single farm holding at the southern end of the former Clune. Only the farmstead and two cottages appear on the OS 1st edition map but building platforms survive along the entire length of the former fermtoun. A number of features were investigated in 2011. Excavation recorded a building of turf-walled construction over stone foundations with a later hearth at one end of the building. The building is thought to date from the late 1700s or earlier. Outside the building was a cobbled area on two sides. At right angles to this building was a stone dyke which had been built upon the foundations of another building.
