Full Description
Church, no longer in ecclesiastical use, built in 1773 on the site of a mid-17th century church, with associated graveyard. It retains an earlier bellcote from 1641, and there is a datestone of 1641 built into the later building. The new 18th century church was built by Alexander Duffus. It is a basic structure with the bellcote the only architectural embellishment. The walls of the church are harled, with the quoins and window surrounds in granite. The roof is slated and there are two metal ventilators on the ridge line. The church was renovated in 1829 and the interior has since been recast, however the original pulpit and gallery front were retained. Inside, there are three mural memorials: (1) Walter Faviere Elrington Bisset, killed in action on Hill 70 at Loos on 25th September 1915, (2) Maurice George Bisset Esq of Lessdrum who died on 16th December 1821, and (3) William Bisset D.D. of Lessendrum (brother to the aforementioned Maurice, and formerly Lord Bishop of Raphoe) who died on 4th September 1834. The rubble walled churchyard contains the burial enclosure of General John Gordon of Culdrain. Photographic recording was carried out in 2019 ahead of proposed development. Also within the churchyard is the First World War Commonwealth war grave of Private Charles Ross, Gordon Highlanders.
Period Notes
Datestone for current recast 1773; original pulpit, gallery and bellcote of previous church of 1641 remain; renovated in 1829; 5 windows reglazed 1900.
