Full Description

Remains of a building, which was ruinous in 1745, annotated as Avochie Castle on historic maps. It is a small 2-storey building, and seems unlikely to have been a castle. The OS Name Book (1871) dismissed its claim to be a castle, noting that the walls were of ordinary thickness. At that time the two gables served as walls for an outhouse built between them. It was probably a small rectangular towerhouse with an east and west gable remaining. It is rubble-built, has a corbelled angle turret at the southeast and is unvaulted. The east gable stands to full height the west to just below chimney height. The north wall stands circa 1.7 m, the south wall has been reduced to wall footings. The stone to the left of the fireplace on the west wall is incised with an inscription similar to that of the other Avochie Castle, Auchnachie (NJ44NE0001).
