Full Description
Memorial, which commemorates James Ferguson, astronomer and instrument maker, who was born at Core of Mayen and who created a number of orreries. On the 1st edition OS map of 1867, 'Ferguson's Tree' is depicted at NJ5733649358. In 1907 a monument was erected in the village of Milltown to commemorate Ferguson's life. It comprises a Rubislaw granite monolith featuring a carved plinth showing the signs of the zodiac and an inscription listing some of his early friends and benefactors. The monument was relocated to its current site ( NJ5471348600) on the King George V playing fields in 1949. For a time Ferguson was employed by Sir James Dunbar of Durn, and whilst staying at Durn House (Aberdeenshire, NJ56NE0022) he painted the two gate stones, one as a terrestrial globe and the other as a celestial map.
