Full Description
Remains of a walled garden to the south-east of the 18th century Wardhouse mansion house (NJ53SE0008), depicted on historic OS maps. It is shown on the 1st and 2nd edition OS maps as divided into three sections. The oblong southern section is smallest. The rectangular middle section to the north is largest, and incorporates a building on the exterior of the north dividing wall, separating it from the northern section that includes a greenhouse and a curved end wall. Current maps show some of the exterior walls have been removed. The greenhouse in the northern section is depicted as unroofed and no longer has a southern wall. A Level 1 Standing Building Survey was carried out in June 2015 on the northern wall of the middle section prior to proposed development. The building survey showed that the wall is constructed from sandstone blocks with an ashlar base course and red sandstone foundation, and stands to a maximum of three metres high. A garden house was recorded on the northern elevation of the wall. It is constructed similarly to the wall, with an ashlar base course, and has a basement that probably once had a boiler. In a second phase, the garden house was altered and a second smaller granite-built structure added on the southern elevation, with a doorway put into the wall between the two. At this time the garden house probably changed use to a greenhouse or potting shed. Both of the structures are roofless. Other features on the wall include a socket stone and a stone with a drilled wall. At the terminal of each end of the wall are the bases for gateposts or pillars. Ashlar sandstone gateposts or pillars that fit the bases, as well as a sandstone capstone, were found by the present owner in the undergrowth. There are iron fittings on the north and south faces of the wall for espalier of fruit trees.
