Full Description
A linear bank, identified following forestry clearance. The feature is circa 75 metres long, oriented north-east to south-west. A trench was excavated across the bank in 2017 as part of the Battle Hill Prehistoric Landscape Project, run by Murray Cook, Hana Kdolska and Theres McCormick with volunteers. It recorded soil and stone elements of the bank and what appears to be a palisade slot. Lithics and prehistoric pottery were recovered. Charcoal from a possible cobbled surface returned a radiocarbon date of 1016-1155 cal AD. An enclosure (NJ53NW0136), hut circle (NJ53NW0138) and cairn (NJ53NW0137) were also excavated as part of this project. Further trenching was carried out in 2019 further investigated the bank and showed this to overlie a larger stone structure which appears to have had a kerb and which may be an element of a robbed out cairn. The linear bank is 75m long, 0.2m high and 11.5m wide, but although it contained stones had no formal structure. A total of 15 sherds of 13th century pottery were recovered from the bank and its associated deposits. Organics residue was radiocarbon dated to 1052-1256 AD. The underlying kerb comprised a series of large edge-set stones.
