Full Description
Cairn, identified following forestry clearance. Initially interpreted as a mount to the south of the enclosure (NJ53NW0136), two trenches were excavated in 2017 as part of the Battle Hill Prehistoric Landscape Project, run by Murray Cook, Hana Kdolska and Theres McCormick with volunteers. A trench on the eastern slope of the cairn recorded a packed stone surface. A slight impression of an edge before continuing at a lower level may indicate two mid-slope kerbs. No obvious kerb was identified at the base. A longer trench was excavated on the western slope. The stones extended across the entire trench and no obvious edge or kerbing was observed. Further excavation in 2018 uncovered more of the extent of the cairn, and showed that it appears to have been flattened and spread. Excavation in 2019 was aimed at characterising the cairn and its relationship to the nearby enclosure. Further excavation was carried out in 2019. The results indicate that the cairn was a non-circular feature suggesting augmentation of a natural mound. As part of the same project, an enclosure (NJ53NW0136), a hut circle (NJ53NW0138) and linear bank (NJ53NW0139) were also excavated.
