Full Description
The Mill of Greenhaugh is depicted on the OS map of 1846 as a woollen mill. It is fed from the River Bogie by a mill lade. To the northeast is the farm of Greenhaugh which has a rectangular block with central open court and a U-shaped block to the north of this, open to the south. The farmhouse, category B Listed, is dated 1823 and is a 2-storey and basement at the front with a 3-storey rear. It is built of squared granite. The front has 3 windows with a cable moulded date panel over the door which retains the good original joinery. There are also coped chimneys. Two mill ponds lie to the E/SE with a lade leading towards two small buildings, south of the farm, one of which is obviously a mill. There is also a well called the 'Woollen Well' to the north of the farm. The farm and mill complex may date to the 18th Century or earlier, as a group of buildings named as 'Greenhaw' is depicted at this location on the Roy map of 1747-52. Standing building survey of the steading buildings was carried out by MAS in October 2018 ahead of proposed demolition. Whilst possible that the mill and smaller buildings may date from the 18th century, it was not possible to confirm this date. By the end of the 19th century the property was described as having 'a modern square of offices', a description which would apply to the U-plan steading which in its original form would have been typical of early to mid 19th century steadings. The property is also described in the mid 19th century as having a separate Gig-House and Threshing Mill. There is documentary evidence for some building works around 1853 but it was not possible to identify what work had been undertaken.
