Full Description
Parish church, late 19th century, built on the site of an earlier church dating from 1621, and associated graveyard. The present church, built 1879-80, in plain Gothic style is rectangular in plan and aligned east-west. It was constructed in coursed dark granite rubble, with contrasting tooled grey granite quoins and window and door surrounds. The roof is slated and the original rain water goods are in place. The west end of the church has an attached two storey session house with an external stone stair leading to a door on the south side. The west face of the session house has a central gabled bay, on top of which is mounted the 17th century bellcote from the earlier church. This bellcote has rectangular uprights and richly-carved finials and pinnacle. The session house has rectangular sash and case windows with clear glazing. There is also a door at ground level on the north side, which gives access to a room below the main session house room. The west gable of the church has the same round rose window and lancet vent as found on the east gable. The 1621 datestone from the previous church has been built into the west gable and there is a sturdy metal finial on the apex. The mound on the south side of the present church indicates the site of the Frendraught or Crichton Aisle of the 17th century church. The graveyard contains some 18th and early 19th century stones. Also wihtin the graveyard is the Commonwealth War Grave of Private Alexander Forbes Stuart, Royal Army Medical Corps.
