Full Description

Remains of a cairn depicted OS 1st edition map, the only remaining cairn of a larger group (see NJ52SW0034) which was traditionally the burial cairns of the slain from the Battle of Tillyangus in AD1571. The OS Name Book (1866) noted that Jock's Cairn appears to be larger than the other cairns, but nearly all the stones had been taken for building. At the time of OS site visit in 1967 it was a turf-covered mound, mainly of stone, severly robbed and spread. RCAHMS site visit 1998 recorded Jock's Cairn as a small, grass-grown cairn measuring 8m by 6.3m and standing 0.4m high, the centre disturbed. It stands on on the crest of a north-facing scarp. A grass grown hollow circa 10m northeast is probably a small quarry for material for the adjacent field wall.
