Full Description

Leslie Castle, dated 1661, the latest example of a fortified house in Scotland. Built for William Forbes of Monymusk, it is L-plan, with a large square stair tower in the angle. It was surrounded by a wall and had a drawbridge and gatehouse. There are circular turrets at each main angle, many gun-loops and shot-holes. The basement is vaulted. The main block contains the kitchen with great fireplace in the west gable and a stone trough for water supply. The moat is almost certainly a relic of the ancient Fortalice of the Leslies. A 12th century castle stood on this site prior to the later 17th century castle. The present castle was restored in 1981-86 to as near original state as possible. Later in use as a private hotel, and then as a bed and breakfast.
