Full Description
Former oatmeal, threshing and saw mills, plus mill house, dairy and byre. Main mill building (on west side of A97) was built 1835 (from dated cill stone) and is a 2-storey and attic rubble building, partly harled. The shape of the mill is worthy of note as it seems that the southeast corner of the building was truncated so as not to prevent any obstruction to the road (now the A97). The central kiln has a small square ventilator with an Aberdeenshire-type revolving cap. At the rear is an eight-spoke, mid-breast wood and iron paddle wheel, 0.89 m by 3.55 m. The remaining buildings seem to date from between 1835 and 1866. Mill out of use by the late 1940s - a major factor in the decision to close the mill was that it had become over-run by rats, which came from the refuse tip located circa 150 m to the northeast of the mill. An interesting feature of the mill is the spring which is located under the waterwheel, and which was used to supply drinking and cooking water until the mains water supply was eventually connected.
Period Notes
