Full Description

Pictish symbol stone Class I with part missing, also known as the 'Percylieu' stone after one of its intermediary sites. It is a slab of whinstone bearing, at the top, two fins of a fish, the rest of which is broken away and below it the arch or horse-shoe symbol which is ornamented with lines and dots. It may have come from the vicinity of the cairns north of Newbigging (NJ52NW0039). It was said to have stood at a well called the 'Salmon Well' at Hillhead (NJ521 265) until 1844 when it was moved to Percylieu (NJ52NW0080) where it was broken to fit a door sill. It was later removed to Cransmill (NJ 4616 3061), thence to Mytice (NJ 4754 3098) where it remained until at least 1910. It was moved to Leith Hall (NJ52NW0004) some time before 1915, when the rubble wall either side of the south gate of the walled garden (NJ52NW0131) was altered or rebuilt to accommodate this and the 'Wolf Stone' (NJ52NW0019) in niches. Both stones were removed from their niches sometime before 1967 and moved to a lean-to within the garden. The stone has now (2014) been moved back to its original niche beside the entrance gate to the garden.
