Full Description

Mill, dating from the 19th century, depicted on the historic OS maps. The 1st edition shows an L-plan mill with three other buildings, one also on an L-plan, to the west. By the time of the 2nd edition one of the rectangular buildings had been removed and the mill is annotated as a corn and saw mill. The buildings are of granite rubble with slate roofs. The mill is single-storey on a high floor, and although the water-wheel is gone some machinery still remains, with a kiln in west arm. The mill was powered by a mill-lade from the Gadie Burn. A mill has been recorded at Clatt since the 12th century, the first being gifted to the hospital of St Peter in Aberdeen, but there is no trace or local knowledge of earlier buildings. The Miller's Cottage is single storey with a garret and two piended dormers. On the front wall is a plaque to Rev Andrew Murray (1794-1866). Reverend Murray was born in the cottage, and went on to become a Minister of the Dutch Reformed Church, and an important figure in church affairs in South Africa. There is a lean-to dairy at the west end of the cottage and a byre attached to the north side.
