Full Description
Remains of a settlement and field system comprising at least five hut circles, enclosure and field system. The remains of five hut circles and an enclosure are situated within a scatter of circa 140 small clearance cairns in a semi-improved field. Four of the hut-circles measure between 8.4m and 10.5m in diameter within grass-grown banks up to 2.4m in thickness. The fifth is 12.5m in diameter within a stony bank spread to 2.6m wide. The northernmost two hut circles are conjoined. The enclosure, which may be the remains of a hut platform, is oval measuring 11.6m by 7.4m with a stony rim 0.3m high. A reverse C-shaped bank east of the enclosure defines the edge of an oval depression, 20m by 15m, which may have been a yard. Within the cairn scatter are stretches of stony banks and lynchets, in two cases overlain by cairns. A large banked enclosure within the now open ground extends into the woodland to the north. A ring cairn (NJ51SW0085) stands on a terrace at the southeastern extent of the recorded features.
