Full Description
Farmstead in use, depicted on the 1st edition OS map as a U-plan steading open to the southeast, with two rectangular buildings to the southwest (possibly a mill). Sluices are shown to the southwest and northeast, and the site is name as 'Mill of Coull'. To the northeast an old limekiln is depicted, while to the south a rectangular enclosure is shown. On the 2nd edition map of 1888, one of the rectangular buildings to the southwest is not shown. A new farmhouse has been added to the south of the steading, and the site is named as 'Coull House'. The limekiln to the north is not shown, and the sluices are no longer labelled as such. Today, the U-plan steading has been altered and extended in size to a sub-square plan. The building to the southwest and the farm house both survive and appear little altered in plan form and the rectangular enclosure is still shown to the south, but is missing its southwest wall. A level 1 building survey was carried out by S. Farrell in January 2010 in advance of the redevelopment of the steading. From this survey, it has been established that the steading likely dates to circa 1830 and seems to have been used for cattle for most of its lifetime. The building has seen major alterations throughout its use, particularly in 1922 when the cattle court was built with most of the original features being removed. The mill is likely of the same date and has also seen changes of use, from mill to saw pit and latterly as a garage.
