Full Description

Farmstead, depicted on historic OS maps. The 1st edition shows three rectangular buildings, the central one with a horse engine attached to its west side, the southernmost with an attached garden enclosure. By the time of the 2nd edition, there had been additions to the northern building, the map showing an L-plan building and rectangular arranged to form a court open to the east. The southernmost building is not shown. building has been converted to a U-shaped steading with open court to the east. The northern group of buildings has also since been removed. The derelict horsemill was surveyed in June 2007 prior to conversion. Buildings are recorded at the site from the mid 18th century. There were considerable agricultural improvements in the area from the 1820s and the farm buildings at Tillchardoch may date from this period. They are shown with the horsemill clearly depicted on an 1855 estate map of Cromar Estate. The horsemill is rectangular, 18.15m by 5.05m externally, with walls of roughly squared granite rubble, except the south gable which had been rebult to insert a barn door. The stone-revetted horse engine platform abuts the outside of the west wall. The stone built setting for the central mechanism and stone channel for the drive mechanism remained in good condition.
