Full Description

Former Laird's house of the Gordons of Esslemont, set high and remote now, built 1668 (or 1688) and formed into a farmhouse in the 19th Century. Accompanied by a farmstead and mill. The house is 2-storey and attic building with centre stair tower, moulded doorway in the south re-entrant angle and corbelled stair turret in the north. The gables are crow-stepped. No shot-holes are visible although some might be hidden behind harling as one is built into the wall of the coach house dated 1703. The attic dormers are 19th century (or possibly earlier) when converted to farmhouse. The steading has acquired a splendid, finely moulded arch with 1703 panel and initials ‘IGMR’ over. Refurbished circa 2002. Probably rebuilt in its present position in the 1890s. The steading is U-plan, of stone with a pitched slate roof on the north and south wings and tin roof on the west wing.

Period Notes
