Full Description

Remains of an Iron Age souterrain. Located on the south side of the A974 at side of road it has a characteristic curved plan running for 10.4m long, 1.8m wide and 1.7 high. It was constructed by digging a trench into the rocky subsoil, lining it with drystone walling and roofing it with substantial stone slabs. The roofing slabs are intact over a large chamber and entrance made from edge set slabs at the northeast end. The chamber was filled with earth until it was removed by the farmer circa 1850. The description of the find at the time says that it was filled 'nearly to the top with...a rich unctous earth.' This suggests that it had been deliberately filled with earth as has been found on other similar sites. Fragments of an urn, several pieces of animal bone (believed to be cattle), a quantity of smooth pebbles, two querns and a large bead were found during the clean out. Two cupmarks can be seen on the left wall.
