Full Description
Farmstead and coach house still in use. The OS 1st edition shows an L-plan building and a long range. By the time of the 2nd edition the L-plan building had been reduced to a rectangular one, the long range amended to a small U-plans building with a small rectangular building to the north. Current maps show that the U-plan building has been reduced to an L-plan. The farmhouse is 2-storey with stone dormer heads, and is dated 17 WSF 76 on door lintel. The former coach house is a late 18th century, single storey L-plan block with stone dormer heads (4) rubble-built: it was converted to a cottage in 1964. In 1998 a watching brief was undertaken by NTS. Excavations to rear of Mains Cottage revealed no archaeological features though occasional finds of modern pottery and glass were recovered. A linear feature was excavated 4m east of Steading Cottage. It was lined with charcoal and sand and backfilled over time with several layers of rubble, may predate the cottage. A watching brief in 2012 on groundworks for relocation of an electricity distribution board to the steadings recorded no archaeological features or finds.
