Full Description
Farmstead, still in use, depicted on historic OS maps. The 1st and 2nd edition maps show two L-plan ranges arranged around a court, with an attached horsemill on the north side of the north wing. To the west is an L-plan house and garden. To the north of the steading is a well. The house dates from the mid-18th century, incorporating earlier fabric. It is a 2-storey, 2-bay South facing house, with a long single storey wing at right angles abutting the West gable, all of which is harled. The centre door is masked by a modern glazed sun porch. There is regular fenestration to the front and rear, with surviving grill seatings in the ground floor jambs and lower first floor windows. The rear elevation has windows in the outer bays and centre stair window. There is a diminutive centre attic light in each gable. 4-pane glazing is used, and there are end stacks and slate roofs. Inside, no original feature survives apart from a wide curved stone staircase of which the tread is probably re-used. Site of earlier manor house. Thornybank was the property of Hay of Rannas until purchased by Gordon of Cairnfield during the 18th century. There is a steading directly to the West of the house.
