Full Description

Smithy, built in the 19th century, probably circa 1870, but incorporating a late-18th century building. It is an unusually large cruciform-plan single-storey rubble-built smithy building, with a long East-West range, and North and South ranges at the Eastern end of the long range. The Southern range is the only recognisable part of the earlier incorporated building, and the rest is from the 19th century. The 18th century South range has a slate roof that has been patched with corrugated iron, and a low, broad South gable with no skews and a small square window close to the ground. There is a similar window at in the East elevation, and a tiny opening off-centre in the West elevation. The East elevation of the 19th century section of the building has brick detailing to two segmental-arched entrances with wooden double doors, one as a central entrance within a projecting gabled bay that is the end gable of the East-West range, and the other is a similar, but slightly lower, entrance in the East-facing elevation of the North range. There is a cross in brick above the central entrance in the projecting bay. To the North of the off-centre entrance in the North range is a low square window, similar to the windows in the 18th century South range. The North gable has a small round-headed brick detailed apex window. Behind the projecting bay, the East-West range extends for five bays, split into two and three with a cross wall between, and there is an entrance in the three-bay South-facing elevation of the Western section of the range. The windows in this range all have concrete lintels, and all the 19th century buildings have corrugated iron roofs. There is a single-storey and attic extension to the West of the smithy buildings that is probably from the late-19th century, with modern alterations. It has end stacks, the Eastern of which has been rebuilt in brick, a modern concrete lean-to addition at the South elevation to the West of the entrance, two dormer-headed windows to the North elevation and a slate roof. A range that formally extended to the North from the West of the East-West range was demolished, and is now replaced by a house built in 1990.
