Full Description

War memorial, commemorating WW I and II, built in 1924-5 by W Birnie Rhind and John Kinross. It is in the form of a tall polished sandstone ashlar pedestal base with panels bearing bronze plaques of names. This is surmounted by a corniced entablature with by two bronze figures on it: a kneeling Royal Navy Reservist in front of a bare headed Gordon Highlander bearing a colour with rifle slung over one shoulder. The Burgh arms appear on the front face. The memorial is enclosed by cast-iron bollards with gilded caps linked by chains. A simple pedestrian entrance is closed by cast-iron gates with crosses. The monument was unveiled in April 1925 by Lt Col. J. Dawson, and the ceremony was attended by Private George McIntosh VC, the only VC recipient of the Gordon Highlanders. A commemorative paving stone for Private Mcintosh beside the war memorial was unveiled in August 2017. The monument is generally in good condition.
