Full Description
Settlement established around 700 AD beside the River Isla. Old Keith is mentioned in a charter of 1195 from King William the Lion. In its early history Keith was a Burgh of Barony. Cattle and horses were sold at the annual Great Simmareve Fair in mid September, where drovers from the highlands sold their cattle on to dealers. The fair was later relocated to the Market Square in New Keith (NJ45SW0153). The first bridge over the River Isla was built in 1609.
