Full Description

Planned village of New Keith, laid out by the Earl of Seafield in 1750. It is a rigid improvement period grid plan bounded by Union Street to the north, and Seafield Park to the south. It was one of the earliest planned villages in the north-east, founded as a linen manufacturing centre. Many of the buildings are of locally quarried schist. The feus as laid out on an estate map of 1764 measure approximately 30 yards by 60 yards, providing a large garden for each property, with lanes running between the feus. The Seafield Arms (Nj45SW0106) was built in 1762 by the Earl of Seafield, and contained a large hall in which the district courts were formerly held. The original feus were later divided to create narrower plots.
