Full Description

Public Institute building, latterly used as local authority offices. Two-storey, asymmetrical fronted building with Italianate detailing, designed by F. D. Robertson of Keith and dated 1885. The building has a tooled and polished ashlar frontage with rubble flanks, and an advanced central bay and round-headed and keystoned entrance with semi-circular light. Paired Corinthian columns flank the upper window and support a pediment. There is an advanced rectangular bay at the left side and all fenestration is round-headed and keystoned and linked at impost level by a continuous stringcourse. There is an octagonal clock tower rising four irregular height stages above the wallhead with long slit lights in the tall first stage, clock faces in alternate facets, tiny paired openings, oculi and a faceted dome with crowning cupola.
