Full Description

War memorial for those who died in World War I and II, built by Sir George Washington Browne in 1919. It is one of three war memorials located within the Memorial Garden in Keith (see also NJ45SW0068 and NJ45SW0069). It comprises a sarcophagus style cenotaph with flanking wing walls on a three-stepped base. Two bronze plaques on either side of a carved wreath and swag frieze on the front of the 'tomb' commemorate those lost in World War I, with plaques and carved text on the inside of the side walls commemorate those lost in World War II. The memorial is generally in very good condition. The memorial garden is enclosed with a tooled rubble wall and cast-iron railings, with entrances in each face flanked by simple ashlar gatepiers with shaped or pyramidal caps. A full transcription of memorial held in AAS Digital Archive. An inscribed paving stone commemorating Victoria Cross recipient Corporal (later Sergeant) John Ripley was unveiled on 9 May 2015. Cpl Ripley, 1st Battalion, Black Watch, received the award for action during the First World War.
