Full Description

Planned village built on a grid system with the main axis of the main street running northeast to southwest with a central square with a clock tower in the middle of it. It was established as a rival to new Keith by the Earls of Fife circa 1759. The buildings, either terraced or semi-detached, are generally single or one-and-a-half storey cottages. Early 20th century photographs show that most of the properties were built of stone and slate, although at that time a few were still rendered and thatched. Despite its ambitious foundations and a steady increase in population through the first half of the 19th century, it never really prospered. In 1878 there were 157 families in 151 homes.
