Full Description
Graveyard and site of church. The church of Ket or Keyth was granted to the cathedral at Elgin (NJ26SW0001) in about 1203, and it is noted that James V lodged at the Kirk of Keith in 1497. The church was dedicated to St. Malrubha (St. Rufus). It was rebuilt in 1569, and finally demolished in 1819. Only the Sacrament House of the early church survives, which has been relocated to the new St. Rufus Parish Church that superseded this one (NJ45SW0024). The graveyard is of irregular shape with interesting range of 17th, 18th and 19th century tombstones, some of the earlier examples displaying rich carving and inscriptions. The graveyard is surrounded by a coped rubble wall. The main entrance is at the East end, and is flanked by a pair of tooled ashlar gatepiers with plain caps. The graveyard is built on three distinct levels, with the original level of the graveyard at the highest point. A ball-finialled bellcote has been re-used on the Botriphnie Church, Drummuir (NJ34SE0001).
