Full Description
Remains of a waterwheel house of mid 19th century date. It is a small detached building in a glen which housed an overshot water wheel. The pit remains though wheel no longer present. The building was in good state of repair in 1970s, but the 2006 map shows it as unroofed. Originally the wheel drove ropes to power machinery set further upslope. Remains of the lade are visible on upslope side. The remains were noted during walkover survey by AOC Archaeology in August 2022 ahead of proposed planting (NJ44SW0159). It is constructed of coursed stone and mortar, surviving to roof height with the partial remains of a slate roof, with three narrow windows in the southwest gable and an entrance on the northwest side (the masonry cracked above the door). Some internal metal fixings from the wheel are present. The whole structure was overgrown with trees, nettles and other vegetation and could only be viewed from the road.
