Full Description

Remains of a small farmstead and three enclosures are depicted on the 1st edition OS map, which shows three roofed buildings. Only one building remained roofed by the time of the 2nd edition OS. Now only part of two buildings are depicted, though remains of the others may lie within the woodland to the north. A programme of excavation was undertaken by CFA in 2013 prior to rerouting of utility services in connection with Clashindarrach windfarm. The site survived as the upstanding remains of two buildings and a rectangular enclosure. Remains recorded by the excavation correspond well to the structures shown on the OS 1st and 2nd edition maps. Also recorded were walls of an enclosure shown on the 1901 OS map, replacing an earlier enclosure. A cobbled layer appears to have been a yard surface within the northeast part of this enclosure, and a midden layer corresponds to a rectangular enclosure, possibly an animal pen, shown on the 1901 map. A possible building platform on the north side of the excavation was previously recorded by the Forestry Commission (FCS SMR BIN039).
