Full Description

Remains of a lime works. Lime manufacturing was started about the middle of the 18th century and continued until the mid-19th century when the source was exhausted. Working extends from quarry to the northeast of Blackhillock for a distance of about 800m south up the valley of the Ardonald Burn. RCAHMS site visit 1990 recorded a number of structures amongst the workings . A lime kiln at NJ46024464 is about 8 m high with flues in three faces and a connecting passage to the rear (now infilled). On the north is another building set into an earlier quarry, though the bowl has collapsed. There are buildings and site of kiln at NJ46034429, one building partly roofed.
