Full Description
Farmstead is still in use. Depicted on the 1st edition OS map as a group of six rectangular buildings, with a square enclosure to the west and a mill dam and sluice to the east. By the time of the 2nd edition map, a new building has been added to the north while some of the other buildings have been altered. Six of the buildings shown on the 2nd edition appear to survive, with slight alterations, while a new building has been added to the south. The pond, dam and sluice are not shown on current OS maps. A standing building survey of the steading buildings was carried out by Murray Archaeological Services in August 2021. The original mid 19th century buildings comprised a water mill, stable, byre and small farmhouse. A new 2-storey farmhouse was built in the later 19th century and the former single storey farmhouse became a bothy. Changes to the buildings in the 20th century reflect changes to dairying practice with increased cattle numbers and associated additional byres and the dairy and milk storage areas. The change to diesel power was also reflected in the change from the mill being water powered in 1929 to run with a belt from a tractor by 1969. At the time of the survey, several of the buildings had been dismantled or fallen into an unsafe derelict condition.
