Full Description
Remains of a limeworks and quarry (Blackhillock Quarry) depicted on historic OS maps. The 1st edition shows a large quarry with a single long building at the north end of the workings. Five roughly oval features, two east and three southwest of the building, indicate kilns. By the time of the 2nd edition map much of the earlier building had been removed, but two additional kilns are shown on its west side, and two more buildings had been added, one to the south and an L-plan one one to the southwest of the original building. The 2nd edition map also depicts a travelling crane running from the area of the new kilns to the southeast part of the quarry. These later 19th century buildings had been removed but new buildings added by the mid 20th century. The quarry has since been considerably extended. Remains of the later kilns at the north end of the site previously survived at the east side of the entrance to the quarry, comprising a pair of single draw kilns of rubble construction with semi-circular, arched draw-holes. In February 2022 these kilns were reported to have been lost to the quarry works, with only the wall with the arched flues surviving. On the west side of the entrance is a rubble construction wall with a single arched opening.
