Full Description

A cottage measuring approximately 6 m x 3 m internally with an outshot of 2 m x 3 m (internally) at the north end. The walls appear to have only ever stood to about a metre high and, presumably, were heightened by turf. The ends, however, do appear to have been gabled. There is a single door on the east side. It is depicted on the OS 1st and 2nd edition maps. The eastern boundary of the enclosure is defined by the ancient stone dyke NJ43NE0057. The enclosure consists of rich loamy soil which has been completely cleared of stones. Its south-western boundary is an earth and stone dyke with its face looking towards the cottage. Its north-western boundary is a more recent drystane dyke which was probably erected in the late 19th century, after the production of the 1st edition OS map and during the formation of the present boundary up Longhill. Before this time it was probably composed of earth and stone like the south-western boundary.
