Full Description

Remains of a sheepfold depicted on the OS 1st edition map. It was probably disused by the time of the 2nd edition map on which it is annotated as 'Old Sheepfold'. RCAHMS site visit 1998 recorded the remains as a cottage measuring 10 m by 4.3 m, surviving as grass-grown stone wall footings 0.7 m wide and 0.4 m high. there is an entrance on the southwest side. Adjoining is an L-plan enclosure divided into two compartments. The remains were recorded during walkover survey by Rathmell Archaeology in August 2024 ahead of proposed woodland creation (NJ42SE0086). The enclosure to the southeast was the best preserved section, 12 m long and 8 m wide, although the southeast wall was not present. Remaining wall sections were a maximum 1.2 m wide. The smaller enclosure to the northwest measured 5 m by 6 m, its walls mostly turf covered with many exposed stones, the northwest corner being the only remaining standing wall segment. The walls were a maximum 1.4 m wide and 0.35 m high.
