Full Description

Former parish church of Auchindoir and Kearn, no longer in ecclesiastical use. This plain Free Church in Lumsden was built in 1843 and became parish kirk and United Presbyterian Church in 1803. The church is tall and relatively narrow, built of grey sandstone with a slate roof. The principal, gable, elevation, faces the green and has a small porch and bellcote, and striking curved skews with roll-moulding at a step half way up. The discrete corner buttresses originally had pinnacles which have been removed or broken off. The central bay is slightly advanced and has a round window with trefoil tracery above which is a triangular inscription panel which reads: UNION FREE CHURCH. In the gablehead is a date panel of 1889, possibly the date when the church was united with the established church congregation. The side walls of the church are plain and simple with equally spaced pointed-arch windows. Attached to the rear gable is a single storey hall built of sandstone blocks with slate roofs and rectangular windows. A roll of honour and documents relating to local men who served in World War I were found in a cupboard at the church in 2014.
