Full Description
Tower house. L-plan 16th century castle, comprising a tower, with a later house and gateway added. The 3-storey tower is dated to the third quarter of the 16th century by Dr. Simpson. It has closed parapet with continuous roof (originally intended to be open, probably change of plan during construction). The exterior is harled. There are numerous gun-ports, a moulded segment-headed doorway, turret at the south east, corbelled parapet on east side of the main part, and a columbarium south gable. The main entrance is through an arched and rusticated gateway built circa 1726 and has re-inserted 1667 coats of arms. This leads to a walled courtyard. The 3 storey east wing probably dates to 1726, with alterations 1906 and the wallhead raised in 1942 after fire damage. The west wing was built in 1908. The walled garden appears to be 18th century or earlier. During World War I, a German Zeppelin, L20, dropped a bomb near Craig Castle. The zeppelin was probably lost and dumping bombs to gain height.
