Full Description
Depopulated settlement. The foundations of 30-40 houses are said to lie in the vicinity of the Bogancloch Lodge. It was visited and described by J Macdonald in circa 1890 in 'Place Names of Strathbogie' as houses 2.43 - 4.26 m long and 1.52-3.04 m wide, foundations formed of rough boulders without any dressing. Some houses have rounded corners, some have doorways at either end and a partition down the centre forming two rooms. Under a deposit of circa 30 cm of soil areas appear to be neatly paved. A large stone is found in the centre of each house. Southernmost erection may be a byre. Place gets its name from 'stony bog' (Bog-na-cloiche) due to deposit of boulders scattered over the area. From Macdonald's description of oblong and houses with 'rounded corners' these could date to the medieval to late medieval period. Roy's map of 1750 shows a settlement in this location as being possibly slightly uphill of the present Lodge. The area is now afforested making any survey of the area difficult. Forestry Commission visit in 2002 recorded an earth and stone dyke running west-southwest from the present Lodge property boundary some 60 m north of the present track. This may relate to one of the garden enclosures shown on the estate plan (NAS RHP 2257).
