Description

The results of the excavation by University of Aberdeen clarified the structural elements of the banks and the inner vitrified wall face and aided in understanding how the wall had collapsed and been subject to antiquarian intervention and stone robbing over time. Within the interior area investigated spreads of tumbled stone with little obvious structure were identified overlying either bedrock or a thin layer of peat. Little material culture was identified, with the finds comprising several undiagnostic lithic fragments not in situ and evidence of modern disturbance in the topsoil in the form of modern glass and plastic cabling. Some faunal remains were identified deposited against the inner face of the vitrified stone wall under tumbled stone wall collapse and waterlogged organic remains were identified at the very base of the well. Samples of vitrified rock from main enclosure, as well as animal bone and organic material were recovered.
