Description

Four test pits were excavated at the confluence of the Geldie and the Dee (Area E):traces of possible features dug into the subsoil below the peat but no lithics were identified Ten test pits were dug on either side of the Dee near the White Bridge. On the south side extensive deposits of peat were revealed (Area A), but no archaeological features. The test pits on the north side revealed shallower peat deposits and no lithics (Area B). Four test pits on a prominent ridge a short distance to the north (Area C) yielded a single small microlith just below the peat. Area D comprised a line of 18 test pits following the path through the peat. Towards the west end greater numbers of llithics were found as the pits approached the Dee. Near to the line of test pits two small eroding pits were found at an eroding face near the north bank of the Dee. Fourtest pits dug near the waterfalls at Chest of Dee recorded over 60 lithics from an eroding face and extensive evidence of pits and cultural layers was evident in the erosion face below the peat. The pits contained extensoive deposits of charcoal which were sampled for dating. Director: UOA Auspices: NTS Fund: NTS
