Description

Four test pits were hand excavated, and four areas of harling were removed from the exterior church walls on 27 August 2025. The test pits showed the foundations to have been constructed by excavation of a trench and infilled with stones. In some places this was in poor condition where stones had been removed by former grave digging or animal burrowing. The foundation of the northern wall of the church was not revealed as the level of the ground is higher on the exterior of the church at this time; a test pit inside this wall would presumably reveal the foundation.
