Description

A total of 17 trenches were excavated in 1985 along the northwest, southwest and southeast sides of the enclosure, and six trenches within the enclosure interior. A further 9 trenches were excavated in 1986, trench 27 covering an area partially exposed by several trenches during the 1985 season. In 1988 an L-shaped trench (32 & 33) was excavated in an attempt to locate the north-eastern side of the enclosure. A final season of excavation was undertaken in 1990, with two trenches (34 & 35) cut into the south face of the sandy hillock found in the interior of the site in order to ascertain its nature, and whether there were any archaeological, as opposed to geological features, still surviving in or under it. A further eight trenches (trenches 37–43, 45) were also positioned over the presumed line of the north-eastern enclosure ditch. The investigation identified three main phases of activity. Charcoal samples taken. Director: C DANIEL Auspices: NEW
